Recreation Centre and Library

Client: The City of Edmonton
Location: Edmonton, AB

The $120 million Meadows Community Centre Combines a recreation centre and public library. The project includes public library, two-rink arena, multipurpose rooms, aquatics centre, fitness centre, gymnasium. This project was completed with REVIT and BIM. The south end of the facility includes a library and twin arenas uses a combination of structural steel main framing and columns with glulam secondary framing and wood roof deck. The 33m clear span gable trusses over the arenas are a combination of glulam top chords and structural steel bottom chord which take advantage of the compression capabilities of the glulam and the tension capabilities of the structural steel.

Grande Prairie West Fire Hall

Client: The City of Grande Prairie
Location: Grande Prairie, AB

The $8 million West Fire Hall includes extensive training facilities, administrative areas for Operations, Logistics and Training, a backup Emergency Center and 911 Dispatch Center in addition to a full service fire hall. The fire hall feathers an efficient and workable design, with administrative areas separated from the living and working quarters for firefighters. The comprehensive outdoor training facility with hose tower is designed to be used by all members of Grande Prairie Fire Department.

A unique features of this fire hall is the design of the main apparatus bay floor. A three-span continuous one-way structural slab on grade that incorporated large drainage trenches at mid-span was the ultimate solution to ensure proper drainage with minimum floor slopes within each apparatus bay while effectively supporting the large fire trucks that will be stationed at this fire hall.

Artic Shores at the Edmonton Valley Zoo

Client: The City of Edmonton
Location: Edmonton, AB

The $14.2 million Arctic Shores includes an exhibit building for seal residence and a filtration building that contains the mechanical systems. The exhibit building is inspired by the arctic tundra and as such is embedded into the earth on two sides which visually extends the landscape through a unique green roof.

The project included two buildings, an exhibit pavilion where the seal resides and are viewed by visitors through floor to floor ceiling glazing and a filtration building that contains the mechanical systems that ensures the water from the pools is retained and reused. Designed as an arctic environment that incorporates geographic element in the landscape, including indoor and outdoor pools for several types of seal species, and habitats for Arctic ground squirrels and arctic foxes

Service Alberta Building

Client: Government of Alberta
Location: Edmonton, AB

The $8.6 million renovation project, restructured an existing building for the accommodation of 200 staff in a high density office environment. The project was designed to create an enjoyable and easily adaptable work environment with formal and casual meeting spaces integrated throughout the work areas. Indoor and exterior amenity spaces, including a lunchroom, recreation room, coffee bars in work areas and landscape lunch areas, were designed to address health and wellness requirements.

The structural engineering challenges of this project was the modification to a portion of the existing structural steel main and second floors to allow the removal of a section of floor allowing south light to flood the lower level recreation room. The front entrance area required the removal of a substantial section of cast in place concrete floor and stairs to create a three-storey atrium that contains a two-storey self-supporting cantilevered structural steel stair.

Institutional

  • Donald School of Business (RDC – Downtown Campus), Red Deer, AB, Canada (2011): Structural Engineering Services, field review and contract administrator. Renovations to RDC’s leased space at the existing Millennium Centre, the space will house multiple classrooms, computer labs, learning common areas, and office space to support business and industry by providing innovative business education. Merchants and businesses will benefit from the more than 600 students and faculty who will work and learn downtown. The structural challenges to cut open 2 nd and 3 rd floor slab to provide stair access. Client: Red Deer College. Project Value: $3M.
  • Olds Elementary School, Olds, AB, Canada (2010): Structural Engineering Services, field review and contract administrator. This is a collaborative design model features classroom pod design with collaborative space for students and teachers. The roof is design for a Vierendeel structural steel trusses. Client: Red Deer Catholic School Board. Project Value: $5M
  • Law Centre Student Lounge, Edmonton, AB, Canada (2010): Structural Engineering services. Concept Design for the Law Centre Student Lounge for the Faculty of Law. Client: University of Alberta. Project Value: $240K

Retail / Commercial

  • The Brick Showroom, Red Deer, AB, Canada (2008): Structural Engineering Services, field review and contract administrator. Project design for a 40,000 sq.ft. showroom space with structural steel framework, steel stud dry wall and slab on grade including loading and unloading ramp for trailer truck.
  • The Golf Towne showroom, Red Deer, AB, Canada (2008): Structural Engineering Services, field review and contract administrator. Project design for a 30,000 sq.ft. showroom space with structural steel framework, steel stud dry wall and slab on grade including loading and unloading ramp for trailer truck.

Recreation

Client: City of Hobbema.

Samsan Cree Nation Youth Centre, Hobbema, AB, Canada: This is $ 12 million project includes structural engineering services. This is a multi-functional facility by providing spaces in the form of a community kitchen, multi-purpose room, library, bowling alley, fitness centre, dance area, outdoor hockey rink, track and field, and a gymnasium.

Tripe Room Structure Replacement

Client: JBS Food Canada
Location: Brooks, AB

The renovation for existing tripe room was required due to structural steel corrosion for roof, mezzanine floor structures, slab re-bars, steel columns and all equipment supporting structures including mezzanine slab. The structural engineering challenge of this project was to carry out the work only during one week plant shutdown.

New Boiler, HVAC addition

Client: JBS Food Canada
Location: Brooks, AB

JBS Foods, Brooks, AB, Canada (2015). Structural Engineering services, field review and contract administration. As part of expansion of the production facility, scope includes addition of 2 new boilers (6500 lbs. each), boiler shed, boiler foundations, pipe-rack, platform, new HVAC supported on structural steel framework. Client: JBS Foods Ltd. Project Value: $3M

Direct Pipe

Client: Innovative Pipeline Crossings
Location: Calgary, AB

Direct Pipe technology that combines the benefits of micro tunneling and HDD drilling techniques. This method allows for simultaneous borehole excavation and pipe installation in one step. The structural engineering challenge was to design the foundation to withstand the thruster machine pushes 750T horizontal force to the foundations.

Pig Iron Plant

Client: Vedanta Group
Location: Goa, India

This plant produces low phosphorous foundry-grade pig iron in India. The Pig Iron Plant has two blast furnaces with a working volume of 173 m3 along with the newly commissioned third blast furnace of 450 m3 capacity, making largest producer of low phosphorous pig iron in India with an installed capacity of 625000 Tones/Year.
